Plan Your Visit : At The Valentine Richmond History Center
John Wickham

Tips

  • Plan your visit around lunch at Wickham's Garden Cafe. Visitors enjoy our charming garden, and feel re-energized when they return to the History Center.
  • Plan for downtown traffic. If you plan to come to the History Center during rush hour or a special event, allow extra time for traffic and for parking.
  • Make a day of it. From the Museum of the Confederacy to the state capital with its famous Houdoun statue of George Washington, there's lots to see within a few blocks here in historic downtown Richmond. Plan a stop or two after you leave us.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. You may do a lot of walking, both within the History Center and city streets outside, so be comfortable.
  • Dress for indoors and out. Richmond can be warm and humid from spring through fall, and summertime is especially warm. However, the History Center is climate controlled to preserve the artifacts, and can be cool, so plan to bring a wrap or light sweater. An umbrella is also a good idea if rain is anywhere in the forecast. Check the local Richmond weather forecast.
  •

  • Sneak a peek online first. Visit the online exhibition previews in the Exhibitions section of this Web site. It may spark some interesting questions when you arrive!
  • Get the kids prepared! If you're planning a visit with children, talk about what they can expect to see. Using this website, ask each child to make a short list of objects they hope to find, and turn the visit into a treasure hunt.
  •  Don't forget to check the calendar for tours, lectures and special events that may be taking place.
