More than 15,000 schoolchildren participate in a Richmond History Center program each year. Our goal is to enable every schoolchild in the metropolitan area to experience a History Center program at least once in their school career.

African Americans in Antebellum Richmond

This program includes a tour of the 1812 Wickham House where students become familiar with the institution of slavery in an urban setting. They will compare and contrast urban and rural slavery through hands-on artifact and primary document interpretations. Additionally they will create an anti-slavery medallion to take home. GRADE: PreK-12

Choose between three topics - Civil War Spies: Elizabeth VanLew & Mary Elizabeth Bowser, Patrick Henry & the Revolution or Trolley Cars & Transportation - for this program. Students will participate in a history exploration using primary sources and hands-on activities. GRADE: K-12

ERA EXPLORATIONS

What was it like in Virginia during the Great Depression and World War II? How did Richmond change during the protests and integration of the 1960s? What made Richmond the city that it is today? Using photographs, video, and audio, this program assists students in understanding the times and attitudes of past eras. Select from four topics - The Great Depression, Rosie the Riveter: the Homefront during WWII, Segregation/Integration, and Growth of a Modern City - for this 90-minute multimedia presentation. (Also available in a 45-minute version.) GRADE: 4-12

Richmond History Center Exhibits

Greek by Design

A one-hour program exploring the elements of Greek and Roman architecture, art, mythology, and design as used in the décor of the 1812 Wickham House. Students will discuss the gods and goddesses, art, nature pictures, and other designs used by the Greeks and Romans in their own culture. Then they will see how those designs were used in one Richmond home. The students have the opportunity to gather, classify, and interpret information about Greek and Roman culture through an inquiry-based instructional program.

Richmond History Center Exhibits
powhatan indians

Through discussion of reproduction artifacts, photographs, and drawings, students learn about the Powhatan Indians' reliance on natural and human resources. An inquiry method investigation of the social and economic conditions of the Powhatan of the Eastern Woodland, this program explores their lasting contributions to today’s society. The students will also use the traditional coil method to create a clay pot to take home. .

Gallery Tour

School groups reserving one of our school programs may add a 30-minute gallery tour for $10 per class. For groups who do not wish to participate in one of the History Center’s school programs, one-hour gallery tours are available at the regular program price of $4 per student, with a minimum fee of $40.

Reservations and Pricing

To make reservations:

  • Contact the Assistant Director of Education at (804) 649-0711, ext. 317, email education@richmondhistorycenter.com, or download our School Groups reservation form.
  • Programs must be scheduled in advance. Four weeks notice is preferred.
  • A deposit of $25 is required one month prior to your visit, with final payment due upon arrival. Arrangements for invoicing must be made in advance. Checks are made payable to the Valentine Richmond History Center.
  • Cancellation of a program must be made by telephone call at least 48 hours in advance.
  • Attendance numbers must be updated 48 hours prior to the scheduled program. Fees due will be based on the number reported.
  • You will receive a confirmation letter detailing your reservation and payment requirements in addition to a teacher resource packet relating to your chosen program.
  • The Richmond History Center is handicap accessible, but please let us know of your group’s special needs in advance of the program so that we may better accommodate you.
Prices for programs at the History Center:
  • $4 per student (except as noted in each program description above), with a minimum fee of $48, for on-site programs.
  • One adult chaperone for every 10 children is required and admitted free of charge. Each additional adult is charged $4.
  • Box lunches can be arranged for your group as well as an on-site location at which to enjoy them. Fees are $9.50 per person.

Prices for outreach programs at your school:

  • $4 or $6 per student with a $75 or $90 minimum fee. No charge for the teacher.
  • Off-site programs outside the Greater Richmond area will be charged a mileage fee.
  • Your full payment must be mailed and received by the History Center on or before your program date. Our History Center teachers are not authorized to accept payment at your school on the day of the outreach.

Tips for a great trip!


  • Eat your bag lunches downtown at the Capital Grounds, Tredegar Iron Works, or local parks like Byrd Park, Maymont Park and Bryan Park.
  • Buses and marked vans can park directly in front of the museum on East Clay Street.
  • If your group is carpooling, the History Center will need to know ahead of time to arrange additional parking.
