Tours are listed by topic and may be offered on multiple dates. For information about custom group tours and step-on guides, contact the History Center's tour director. Busses are not wheelchair accessible. All tours require reservations.

Richmond History Center Exhibits

NEW! let Freedom Ring
When Patrick Henry famously cried, “Give me liberty, or give me death,” he set in motion the movement toward American independence. Over the years, freedom, liberty and equal rights have helped define this nation. On this July 4th, explore the Richmond connection and Let Freedom Ring! Includes stops at St. John’s Church and Capitol Square.

DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 4, 2009; 10:00 - 12:30 a.m.

Richmond History Center ExhibitsNEW! I know richmond: The Bus Tour
An overview of the history of the city of Richmond, including Court End, the James River and the Fall Line, Church Hill, Jackson Ward, the Fan and Monument Avenue. Tour drives by St. John's Church, Hollywood Cemetery, Main Street Station, the Jefferson Hotel and the Museum and White House of the Confederacy. The group also will have the opportunity to tour the Capitol, walk Capitol Square and see the newly dedicated Civil Rights Memorial.

DATE/TIME: Saturday, March 21st, July 18th, and November 27th, 2009; 1:00 - 4:00p.m.

COST: $23 for adults; $20 for History Center members, and children 6-18 years old; children under 6 free. Includes admission to the History Center day of tour.

NEW! Chesterfield County
Join us for this day-long bus tour of Chesterfield County. From the History Center, the tour will head south through Manchester to Magnolia Grange, where participants will take a tour before heading to the Chesterfield County Museum Complex for box lunches and a tour of that site. The day culminates with a drive to Eppington Plantation, circa 1770, along the Appomattox River, where participants will tour the house and grounds before heading back to Richmond.

The Beauty of Tiffany Glass
Richmond is home to a number of Lewis Comfort Tiffany’s stained glass windows, commissioned during the early 20th century as both public and religious art. Stops include the Ginter Mausoleum at Hollywood Cemetery, as well as St. Paul’s and St. James’s Episcopal churches.

Jewish History in Richmond
Visit the neighborhoods and commercial districts that figure prominently in the history of Richmond’s Jewish population. Includes Shockoe Bottom, Shockoe Cemetery, the East End and a tour of the Beth Ahabah Museum and Archives.

Richmond’s Lesbian and Gay History
Beth Marschak, co-author of Images of America: Lesbian and Gay Richmond, explores the people and events that have shaped Richmond’s gay and lesbian community. Discussion includes women who passed as men to serve in the military, the literary and café society of the 1920’s-40’s, and the rise of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights movement.

The Wannabe Ghosts of Richmond
Learn about untimely deaths and alleged ghost sightings on this spirited excursion, which covers the Church Hill train tunnel, Hollywood Cemetery, the Jefferson Hotel, Monumental Church and more.

Richmond History Center Exhibitsafrican American Heritage
Examine the African American experience during key points in Richmond’s history, including the Civil War, Reconstruction and the Jim Crow era, and honor the impact of modern Richmonders such as Arthur Ashe and Douglas Wilder. Includes a trip through historic Jackson Ward, frequently referred to as “The Black Wall Street of America,” and a visit to the Maggie Walker Historic Site.

As part of Women’s History Month, join your guide for this 3-hour tour that focuses on the lives and accomplishments of a number of noted Richmond women including Captain Sally Tompkins, Phoebe Yates Pember, Lila Meade Valentine, Mary Elizabeth Bowser and Maggie L. Walker. Tour includes a stop at the Ellen Glasgow House.

Richmond History Center ExhibitsCivil War Sampler
A comprehensive look at the unique role Richmond played as the Capital of the Confederacy, this tour includes Church Hill, Shockoe Bottom, Court End, the canal area, Hollywood Cemetery and Monument Avenue, with stops at Tredegar Iron Works and the battlefields at Gaines Mill and Cold Harbor.

african American Cemeteries from the Gilded Age Veronica A. Davis, author of Here I Lay My Burdens Down, A History of the Black Cemeteries of Richmond, Virginia, leads a tour of Woodland, Evergreen, Colored Paupers and Mt. Olivet Cemeteries, as well as a stop at the Maggie L. Walker Historic Site. Includes some walking; please wear comfortable shoes. Meet your guide at the History Center. NEW! Harry Kollatz, Jr.'s Richmond in Ragtime
Harry Kollatz, Jr., author of Richmond in Ragtime, takes us back to 1909-1911, when muckracking agitator Adon A. Yoder was beaten up, jailed and sued for trying to clean up Richmond and the Shockoe red light district. Learn about courageous suffragists, automobile endurance contests, airplane exhibitions, strange deaths and fatal love triangles. This is your grandfather’s Richmond.

Guided Bus Tour Tips

  • Plan to arrive 15 minutes before the start of the tour.
  • Unless otherwise stated, all bus tours start at the Valentine Richmond History Center, 1015 E. Clay St. and are three hours in length.
  • You may park in the History Center lot located behind the Center (free or validated). The entrance is on 10th St. Parking is also available on the street and in the MCV parking deck (free or validated) at the end of the 1200 block of Clay St.
