Going In Style: African-American Cemeteries from the Gilded Age
Veronica A. Davis, author of Here I Lay My Burdens Down, A History of the Black Cemeteries of Richmond, Virginia, leads a tour of Woodland, Evergreen and Colored Paupers Cemeteries and discusses their histories, the lives of prominent figures buried there and the symbolism of headstones. Includes some walking; please wear comfortable shoes.

NEW! Richmond's Lesbian and Gay History
Join Beth Marschak, co-author of Images of America: Lesbian and Gay Richmond and community activist and historian, for an exploration of the people and events that have shaped Richmond’s gay and lesbian community. Discussion includes women who passed as men to serve in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars; the literary and café society of the 1920’s-40’s; and the rise of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights movement, from the late 1950’s through the present. Adult content. Parental discretion advised. .

african American Heritage
Remember the era of Richmond’s slave traders, revisit the role of free blacks and urban slaves, discuss the contributions of blacks during the Civil War, examine the African American experience during Reconstruction and the Jim Crow era, and honor the impact of the lives of modern Richmonders Arthur Ashe and Douglas Wilder. The tour includes a trip through historic Jackson Ward, frequently referred to as "The Black Wall Street of America," and a visit to the Maggie Walker Historic Site.

Richmond’s Steel Magnolias: Women Who Mattered
As part of Women’s History Month, join your guide for this 3-hour tour that focuses on the lives and accomplishments of a number of noted Richmond women including Captain Sally Tompkins, Phoebe Yates Pember, Lila Meade Valentine, Mary Elizabeth Bowser and Maggie L. Walker. Tour includes a stop at the Ellen Glasgow House. Meet your guide at the Valentine Richmond History Center, 1015 East Clay Street at 1:00 p.m. Includes admission to the History Center day of tour.

Civil War Sampler
A comprehensive look at the unique role Richmond played as the Capital of the Confederacy, this tour includes Church Hill, Shockoe Bottom, Court End, the canal area, Hollywood Cemetery and Monument Avenue, with stops at Tredegar Iron Works and the battlefields at Gaines Mill and Cold Harbor.

Kollatz Does Richmond: From the Bottom Up NEW in 2008! Harry Kollatz, Jr., author of True Richmond Stories, leads a journey based upon little-known but nevertheless true tales, from the 1607 planting of the cross by Christopher Newport to Richmond's early 20th century shipbuilding industry, including but not limited to the Municipal War of 1870, a giant sturgeon,the first City Hall, and the Hollywood Cemetery pyramid. You won't see Richmond the same way again.

Baseball and Richmond "Take me out to the ballgame…"
Begin with a behind-the-scenes walking tour of the Diamond during its last season as home to the Richmond Braves, followed by a bus tour of Richmond’s baseball history led by Scott P. The Beauty of Tiffany Glass
Richmond is home to a number of Lewis Comfort Tiffany’s stained glass windows, commissioned in the 20th century as both public and religious art. Experience a number of these beautiful windows and learn about the historic sites where they’re installed. Stops include the Ginter Mausoleum at Hollywood Cemetery, as well as St. Paul’s and St. James Episcopal Churches.

Guided Bus Tour Tips
- Plan to arrive 15 minutes before the start of the tour.
- All bus tours* start at the Valentine Richmond History Center, 1015 E. Clay St. and vary in length.
*With exception of the Baseball and Richmond Tour where you will meet your guide at the Diamond.
- You may park in the History Center lot located behind the Center (free or validated). The entrance is on 10th St. Parking is also available on the street and in the MCV parking deck (free or validated) at the end of the 1200 block of Clay St.
