School Desegregation

Richmond, Virginia:

The Great Experiment -- This links to the September 11, 2001 Style Weekly article by Clara Silverstein about her memories of busing in Richmond, Virginia in the 1970s.

Prince Edward County, Virginia:

Separate But Not Equal: Race, Education, and Prince Edward County, Virginia -- This online exhibit is maintained by Special Collections and Archives, James Branch Cabell Library, at Virginia Commonwealth University. It provides images, documents, a bibliography and links regarding the desegregation issues in Prince Edward County.

"They Closed Their Schools" -- This webpage provides an extensive bibliography that includes electronic texts, books, journal articles, video recordings, and websites on the desegregation of Prince Edward County Schools.

We Shall Overcome: Historic Places of the Civil Rights Movement -- This site is hosted by the National Park Service. It provides a list of historic sites organized by state. It includes the Robert Roussa Moton High School, the site of a student strike that eventually led to the closing of public schools in Prince Edward County, Virginia.

Virginia Online Legislature -- This web site has an online version of the Virginia State Constitution which contains Article VIII that specifies what the responsibilities of the state are regarding education.

Little Rock, Arkansas:

Little Rock Central High 40th Anniversary -- This web site commemorates the 40th anniversary of desegregation of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. It includes biographies of the Little Rock Nine, a timeline of the school's desegregation effort, and images regarding this historic event.

Little Rock 9, Integration: A Collaborative WebQuest on Racial Desegregation in Schools -- Sponsored by Pacific Bell Education First, this site provides web resources and assignments for students to complete dealing with school desegregation.

Civil Rights

Exhibits:

The African American Odyssey: A Quest for Full Citizenship -- This web exhibit is hosted by the Library of Congress. It traces the struggle of African Americans to gain equality in the United States. The Civil Rights Era section provides a brief overview of the Civil Rights Era and provides images from their collection to illustrate important aspects of this critical point in our nation's history.

Miscellaneous:

The Ground Beneath Our Feet -- A documentary film series and website about Virginia's history after the Civil War. The Massive Resistance (Episode 3) section of this website offers a timeline, images, documents (including interview transcriptions) and multimedia that highlight the events and people involved in the massive resistance era of Virginia's history.

Timeline of the American Civil Rights Movements -- This Internet resource is hosted by Western Michigan University and includes a brief timeline of the Civil Rights Movement.

Dailypress.com: SOLutions -- This website provides teachers with cartoons that deal with historical events and people. Here is one that deals with massive resistance.
