Richmond History Center Exhibits

The History Center’s curriculum for adults seeks to expand a person’s appreciation of Richmond’s past.  Slide presentations are conducted by the History Center’s curatorial staff and, when held on-site, include related artifacts from the collection or a current exhibition.

Group Visits to the History Center
Bring your group to visit the Valentine Richmond History Center. Galleries are self-guided. Our exhibitions include "Creating History: The Valentine Family and Museum" and "Discovering Collections, Making Connections," as well as the Edward V. Valentine Sculpture Studio. Visit the Exhibitions section to learn more.

WickHam House Tours
Groups of 10 or more can arrange special guided tours of the 1812 Wickham House, a National Historic Landmark and one of the History Center’s greatest treasures. Read about the Wickham House.

Slide Show Lectures

Bring your group to the Center for a gallery and house tour and top it off with a slide show lecture! These slide show lectures are also available at your location. Topics range from Richmond Through the Eye of the Camera to Rosie the Riveter: Fashion and the Factory.

Richmond through the Eye of the Camera
(Parts I and II)

Follow Richmond’s triumphs and failures from the 1850s through the 1980s as seen through the artistic eye of the photographer. View photographs depicting the architecture, landscape, personalities and events from these decades of transition.

Rosie the Riveter: Fashion and the Factory

During World War II, women became workers in defense factories throughout Virginia and the nation. This program explores the lives of these women as well as how they dressed for their new working roles.

Invitation to a fancy Dress Ball

Nineteenth-century fancy dress balls offered the upper classes a chance to put on a costume and dance the night away. Take a peek at some lavish balls held in London, Paris and Richmond. See examples of the costumes worn and discover the social etiquette of the times.

  • Historic Richmond Tours
    Our tours can be customized to fit an individual group’s need or the group can select from a variety of existing tours that include Richmond Highlights, Old Richmond Today, African-American Heritage and a Civil War Sampler. Learn more.

Reservations and Pricing

To make reservations:

  • Contact the Assistant Director of Education at (804) 649-0711, ext. 317 or education@richmondhistorycenter.com.
  •  Download a reservation form to fax or mail to us.
  • A confirmation letter will be mailed to you after you have made your reservation.
  • A $25.00 deposit is due within two weeks upon receipt of a confirmation letter. Final payment is due on or before arrival. Checks are made payable to the Valentine Richmond History Center. Cancellations must be made at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled date to receive a refund.

Prices for programs at the History Center:

  • Group admission to the museum is $7.00 per participant. Wickham House tours are available at no additional charge; however, advanced notice is required.
  • Onsite group lectures are $8.00 per person, $7.00 for seniors, which includes admission to the galleries and Wickham House.
  • Outreach slide lectures are available dependant on Curator availability and cost a $75.00 flat fee.
  • Box lunches can be arranged for your group as well as an on site location at which to eat them. Cost is $9.50 per person.
