Assistant Director of Education

Status:  Full-Time/Exempt
Reports to:  Director of Education

Job Summary:  The Assistant Director of Education has primary responsibility for handling adult programs and group visits, school programs, and special programs.  S/he serves as a backup for Historic Richmond Tours reservations; supports the Director of Education; coordinates and recruits for the volunteer and internship programs; and actively supports the History Center’s marketing plan.

History Center Teacher (HCT)

Status: Part-Time/Non-Exempt

Visitor Services Liasion (VSL)

Status: Part-Time/Non-Exempt
Reports to: Director of Visitor Services

Job Summary: The Visitor Services Liaison has responsibility for implementing the daily procedures at the front desk.  He/she is a primary source of access and communication within the History Center. This person answers and directs phone calls or other inquires, processes admissions fees, takes and processes reservations for the public walking and bus tours, assists the gift shop with sales, helps to provide security for the History Center by issuing badges and keeping logs for visitors to restricted areas, and provides Wickham House tours when necessary in the absence of a volunteer.  Weekend availability required.

Internships

Whether completing an inventory of an important collection, teaching a hands-on educational program to school children or helping to plan a development event, interns promote the Valentine Richmond History Center’s mission to collect, preserve and interpret our region’s rich history.

The History Center offers year-round undergraduate and graduate level internships in the museum field, with projects designed to benefit both the intern and the History Center.

Departments

  • Internships are available in following departments: Archives/Photograph Collection, Development, Finance, General Collections, Tours, Education, Public Relations & Marketing, and Registrar.

General Internships

  • General internships are non-paid, however, it may be possible to receive college credit depending on your school's requirements. General internships are offered year-round.

Funded Internships

  • Funded internships are offered during the summer months on a competitive basis.
  • Several of our funded internships are made possible through the Bobby Chandler Internship program, which is generously funded by the Kip Kephart Foundation. These internships are awarded through a competitive application process to four interns each summer.
  • A minimum commitment of 150 hours is required. An honorarium will be provided upon completion.
  • To apply for a funded internship, send a completed internship application (pdf), a copy of your resume, cover letter, official college transcripts and one letter of recommendation from a college professor to the Assistant Director of Education at the Valentine Richmond History Center. Deadline is March 1st.

Internship Schedules

  • Interns work during the business week, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:30 pm.
  • Schedules are arranged between the intern and their supervisor.

Benefits

  • Benefits include: 10% discounts in the Gift Shop and Sally Bell's Kitchen and free admission to the History Center Galleries during the internship period.

Parking

  • Intern parking is not fully covered by the History Center, although discounted rates are available in neighborhood parking decks. The History Center's small lot is reserved for visitors, members and appointments.
